The Open Source Portfolio in the Enterprise

The use of Open Source in the enterprise is constantly increasing driven by the realization that Open Source Software is able to address the business requirements of the business stakeholders and thereby allowing to take advantage of the TCO benefits of OSS.

This leads to a need to manage OSS like every other asset in an enterprise. Contrary to commercial software, OSS can enter the enterprise through multiple channels possibly bypassing existing policies and processes which in turn can lead to potential exposures in terms of supportability and legal compliance.

The Open Source Heath Check is a set of services designed to create a snapshot of how OSS is managed in an enterprise. An enterprise that is in control of its OSS assets is able to answer the following questions:

  1. What OSS is used in the enterprise?
  2. Where is it being used?
  3. How is it being used?

The outcome of the Open Source Health Check will provide an analysis of potential gaps in existing processes that might prevent efficient management of OSS plus an inventory of existing OSS in the enterprise. In addition, it will unveil additional opportunities for the enterprise to take advantage of OSS; for example in areas like Open Source middleware directories and databases.
